It is a great day out involving lots of traveling on snow, ice, glacier and challenging alpine rock climbing along with a technical descent via the west ridge. Along the southwestern boundary of Valhalla Provincial Park is an outstanding group of spires including Mount Dag, Wolf's Ears, Gimli, Asgard, and Gladsheim, all over 2,660m. These peaks offer great climbing. Mount Gimli is one of the most dramatic and accessible of the spires. And the second half included: the Muzzle (2,700m), Gimli Peak (2,810m), Nisleheim Peak (2,650m), Midgard Peak (2,810m), Asgard Peak (2,830m), The Trireme Wall (2,715m) and Gladsheim Peak (2,830m). “The route involves about 12km of linear distance and 2,300m of elevation gain,” notes Lussier. The true (i.e. highest) summit of Gladsheim is on the east end of the peak. Gimli Peak is perhaps the most accessible of the stunning array of spectacular mountains at the south end of British Columbia's Valhalla Provincial Park. While the peak's south ridge is a classic technical route which attracts climbers from all over the world, the east ridge (climbers' descent route) is a Class 3 scramble well within the capability of mere mortals like myself.
