Furthermore, there are equivocal findings about improvements in cycling efficiency, found only in the study of Sunde et al. (2010) and in the study of 2020-05-31 · Re-drawn from Rønnestad et al. To better understand why the SI lead to superior performance adaptations, we investigated the acute muscular and hormonal responses to SI and LI in elite cyclists (1).Despite riding at a higher physiological strain, we observed similar acute muscular responses (mRNA) after SI and LI. Bent R Rønnestad Purpose: To compare the effects of combined plyometric and strength training on ice hockey players' skating sprint performance with strength training only.
High intensity interval training is an effective way of improving endurance performance. With the numerous variables that can be altered when designing a training programme, the number of permutations can be overwhelming. In recent years, longer intervals (4-10 minutes) seem to have become increasingly more popular. More recently, several studies have been published investigating the…
2018-12-19 2020-12-06 During the last decade numerous review articles have been published on how concurrent strength and endurance training affect cycling performance. However, none of these have reviewed if there are any sex differences in the effects of concurrent training on cycling performance, and most research in this area has been performed with male cyclists. Thus, the aim of the current paper is to review Abstract. In this study we tested the hypothesis that performing 1 h of regular light exercise in a heat chamber (HEAT; 37.8 ± 0.5°C; 65.4 ± 1.8% humidity) 5 times week −1 for a total of 5 weeks increases haemoglobin mass (Hb mass) and exercise performance in elite cyclists ( = 76.2 ± 7.6 ml min −1 kg −1).Twenty‐three male volunteers were assigned to HEAT (n = 11) or CON (n = 12 For research purposes, lactate threshold is often estimated to a blood lactate concentration of 4 mmol/L.

In brief, what Rønnestad did was study whether a traditional design, where each of the four weeks consisted of two high intensity interval training (HIIT) sessions with the remainder endurance sessions, was the ideal distribution pattern for those high intensity workouts. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of 10 weeks of effort‐matched short intervals (SI; n = 9) or long intervals (LI; n = 7) in cyclists. The high‐intensity interval sessions (HIT) were performed twice a week interspersed with low‐intensity training. Abstract. The purpose of this study was to investigate the acute physiological responses of interval protocols using the minimal power output (MAP) that elicits peak oxygen uptake (V [Combining Dot Above]O2peak) as exercise intensity and different durations of work intervals during intermittent cycling. In randomized order, 13 well-trained male
The Rønnestad Protocol Warm up: 10 minutes easy ( 60% FTP) Intervals: three sets of 13 repeats of 30-seconds hard (115% FTP), 15 seconds easy ( 50% FTP); 3 minutes rest ( 55% FTP) in between sets Each protocol had the same work and recovery power and ratio of work·recovery−1. The protocols consisted of long-interval HIIT (LIHIIT, 3 min work—2 min recovery), short-interval HIIT (SIHIIT, 30 s work—20 s recovery), and high-intensity decreasing interval training (HIDIT, work from 3 min to 30 s and recovery from 2 min to 20 s).

Interestingly, Rønnestad and colleagues argue that the 2:1 work to recovery ratio seems to allow more time spent above 90% of VO2 max (1). This might be in favour of formats such as 30/15, 40/20, 45/15 and 60/30. As of today, there is no available research to suggest which of the above methods are more efficient.
Participants were also instructed to consume the same type of meal before each test and were not allowed to eat during the hour preceding a test or to consume coffee or other products containing caffeine during the 5 h preceding the tests. Hb mass was determined before and after the intervention period in conjunction with an extensive exercise test protocol (conducted at 16–19°C). HEAT increased ( P < 0.05) Hb mass by 42 g from 893 ± 78 to 935 ± 108 g whereas Hb mass remained unchanged (+6 g) in CON. Rønnestad et al suggests that the 30/15 format allows for more training time above 90% of VO2 max, and thus greater training stimulus. 2) Furthermore, Rønnestad and colleagues highlight that it has been suggested that time spent at high intensity has an additive effect on muscular adaptation. 2016-06-27 · Rønnestad BR, Hansen J, Vegge G, Tønnessen E, Slettaløkken G.
